 6-May   v Farnsfield

On a wonderful evening in Farnsfield , some excellent bowling , fielding and aggressive batting saw a the U15s beat Farnsfield. Farnsfield were without their excellent U15 player Sam Wood who was at the Notts Academy along with our own Sam Johnson.

Harriet Rogers got Southwell off to a perfect start with a wicket with the 1st ball of the game. Farnsfield Batsmen Neville, Ness & Dean ( 23*) showed some excellent defence and shots. For Southwell Harriet bowled 4 overs 2 for 5 !George Bacon 4 overs 1 for 9, and Jack Grimley 3 overs 2 for 18. Dan Sprawson, Euan Haynes and Alex Milton all bowled tidily, but the field setting and standards were excellent, topped off by Max Danby taking 2 catches and stumping.

Openers Max Danby and Grant McCarthy ran well between the wickets & put away anything short. Max retired on 40. George Bacon then finished the game with a quickfire 23.

Last Sunday they played Notts and Arnold CC in the Final of the Knock-out Cup. Once again they were convincing winners – this time by 9 wickets.

Coaches Comments.

The team had an outstanding season in all respects – improving as individual players and as a team. They thoroughly deserved their end of season success in lifting two trophies. In total they won 10 of their 11 games.

Unfortunately we do not have the scorecards for the County Cup fixtures, but in all of the League and League Cup games they batted second 5 times and won each game by an average of 8 wickets; whilst batting first they won by an average of 61 runs!!

With such commanding performances it is difficult to get every player fully involved in each fixture, but it was very pleasing to see the whole squad being fully involved in a series of superb and professional fielding performances. This aspect of their game was the one most frequently commented upon by both opposition coaches and spectators, and every single player can be proud of their individual contributions.

There were, nevertheless, many outstanding individual performances. The top three batsman never let us down. Ali Haynes scored his 222 runs (av. 44.4) so quickly that the game was frequently won in the first 7 or 8 overs of our innings. His opening partner, George Bowie scored 277 runs at an average of 69.25. Matt Wookey batted in just 6 of the games, often at number three, and scored 157 runs without ever being out!

Similarly, the top 6 bowlers had superb seasons. As a group they bowled 140 overs and each one of them had an economy rate of under 5 an over. The remaining 32 overs were shared around, at a rate of 5.5 per over.

There were two hat-tricks, by Harriet Rogers and George Bacon, which was just reward for consistently straight bowling. Harriet and Alex Rainbow were an effective opening partnership, rarely failing to make an early break through, and they took 9 and 8 wickets respectively. George Bacon emerged as a strike bowler and took 10 wickets at 6 runs per wicket with an economy rate of 3.8. George Bowie bowled the most overs (28), frequently at the end of the innings when the opposition were hitting out, but still managed an economy rate of under 5, whilst Ali Haynes took the most wickets (11 at 6.6) whilst also bowling at the ‘death’. Matt Wookey bowled less as George Bacon came through, but still managed to bowl 19 overs at only 3.3 per over.

Finally, it has been a great pleasure to see all of the squad playing adult cricket at weekends, which has certainly helped them to improve. We look forward to seeing them playing for Southwell next season on both Saturdays and Sundays. We hope that they will continue to listen, learn, behave well, appreciate the opportunities given, and improve. Congratulations to all.
