2008 Southwell Vixens, 13th July
For the rearranged final fixtures of the season we ventured to Plumtree. The first task was to get 8 players, and the manager is very grateful to Ruth for answering a late summons.
The first match was against the impressive, unbeaten Kinoulton girls. Megan and Rachel opened solidly, albeit without Megan’s usual fireworks, Fiona made her top score of the season, Holly was desperately unlucky to be caught on the boundary. Ruth managed her customary 6s to take the team to a respectable score. In reply, Kinoulton started very well. Megan and Fiona slowed them down with accurate bowling, Ruth bowled an epic maiden against their star batter, Ella was unlucky to have a catch dropped, and Jo finished with an immaculate final over, demonstrating the benefit of practising in the garden with dad and older brother. Particularly noteworthy was a comprehensive piece of fielding at mid on by Helena. But it wasn’t quite enough. Had just 2 balls gone differently we’d have won by 13, as it was the Vixens played with great spirit and skill. The opposition scorer commented on the improvement and ability shown by the team.
Vixens 232 Kinoulton 243
Due to the unavailability of any alternatives, the same players faced Bridgfordians in the second game. Uniquely our opponents chose to bat. Although we didn’t take a wicket, the bowling and fielding were uniformly tight and accurate. When we batted, Megan equalled their score in the first over, bringing her total to a remarkable 226 runs in 14 club and school games this year. Thereafter we consolidated well. Jo hit a 6, Ella three 4s, Ruth two 6s, and Rachel managed to avoid suicidal running (which role was taken up by Ella and Ruth in a particularly Keystone Cops episode where Ruth ran 2 and Ella was run out!). Still, we were never in any danger of coming second.
Bridgfordians 220 Vixens 262
So, a very successful season ends. 20 players appeared for the Vixens, all of whom contributed well. At the end I won’t mention individuals, as what shone through was the collective team spirit shown by the girls – the fact that they backed up for each other, encouraged each other, and simply played well as a team. Many individuals made giant strides this summer and are very promising young cricketers. It has been an unalloyed pleasure managing them.

Southwell Vixens, Kwik Cricket: Sunday, 29th June We travelled to Kinoulton for the 4th week of matches, where we met a cross-wind similar to last week’s.
Our first game was against Wollaton. Captain Tilly won the toss and chose to bat. Megan and Tilly started well – good running and good hitting. Mati and Chloe took over, the deposed skipper hitting a six off her final ball and she actually played a couple of decent offside drives! Jo and Holly consolidated, then Fran batted beautifully to hit 3 successive boundaries. We won’t dwell on Fiona’s unlucky run out. The bowling was good, in spite of the vagaries of the weather. Fiona bowled a maiden, Holly lobbed a few hand grenades, a batter got after Tilly a bit, Jo bowled a great length and line to complete a wicket maiden. The rest of the bowlers all played their part and …Megan took a catch! Once more, the ground fielding was committed and secure, and our total never looked in danger.
Vixens 162 Wollaton 118
We lost the toss in the second game, but batted first once again, Naomi and Emma joining the team for a 10 a side contest. Megan started explosively, 18 off the first 4 balls, but then slowed down. Mati’s pull shot brought more reward, Naomi managed a boundary … all of which paved the way for Holly, who hoisted the ball over the boundary for two 6s. Fiona struck the ball well, and was then run out (as usual!! – the only wickets we lost today). Fran also batted with pleasing confidence. Megan opened the bowling superbly – a bit of oomph bowled the opener. Mati bowled three trademark good balls, accurate and bouncy, but was clobbered on the other three. Naomi bowled a maiden, Jo took another wicket. Holly managed a wicket maiden thanks to a nonchalantly taken catch by Jo, Naomi took another off Emma. Fiona, Tilly and Fran bowled with accuracy at the end. Holly demonstrated superb ground fielding on the square leg boundary, which set the benchmark for the rest of the team.

Great play this weekend: batting, bowling and fielding filled with belief and commitment. The team goes from strength to strength. Good luck to many of the same girls who play for school in the East Midlands Regional competition in the week. Chris Steel Southwell Vixens, Kwik Cricket 22nd June Vixens were again at home in Week 3 of the competition, and an impressive 14 girls turned up. Or 14 impressive girls… Captain for the day was birthday girl Mati. Weather conditions were sunny with a touch of a breeze!
Our first opponents were Radcliffe on Trent who had beaten us comprehensively two weeks earlier, so a desire for revenge was in the air. We batted first, Megan used the breeze well to amass 26 runs off the second over, Rachel and Mati pushed the score on further. Our debutants, Jo and Holly, each scored runs (including a fine boundary for Holly) but each was out once, which set the scene for Ruth and Harriet. It took Ruth an over to get her eye in, but, once she had, the ball duly disappeared with monotonous regularity towards the trees. Harriet scored 1, but it was a good 1! When Radcliffe batted, the bowling and fielding was quite superb. The opening over went for 11, but Holly took a wicket in the next – a fine catch from Harriet. Ruth and Harriet kept a dangerous batter quiet, Rachel and Jo bowled accurately. Tilly and the skipper finished things off, conceding only 5 runs between them. All the ground fielding was committed and secure, Mati showed poise behind the stumps, backing up was happening all over the place, we looked like a team of cricketers. We hope that Fiona has no after-effects of taking a ball on the forehead!
Vixens 164 Radcliffe 120
For the second match, the manager made wholesale changes. The skipper won the toss and made the decision to bowl first. Throughout we bowled tidily, but conceded a few too many wides as Bridgfordians scored 133, special mention to Jess for some excellent fielding at long leg. Not an impossible target, but we had rested our big hitters. Mati and Tilly started well, the skipper timing a beautiful 4 off her legs. Chloe and Fran were second in, and took the score to 123, Chloe showing great improvement in technique. Fiona and Anna batted nicely against some hard-to-hit bowling. Amelia and Jess pushed the score on so that 6 were needed off the last over. But we couldn’t quite connect properly, and Jess was bowled off the last ball going for glory. A good display by an inexperienced team. If only Mati had decided to bat first!
Bridgfordians 132 Vixens 124
Overall, I have been really pleased by the girls’ work and performances. 18 players have represented the club so far, half of whom making their debuts. We have made vast strides in all aspects of the game: I have been delighted by the fielding, concentration and teamwork. The girls can be proud of themselves. Nevertheless, the aim is higher.
Southwell Vixens, Kwik Cricket 15th June We played host this week on a morning of variable weather.
Our first game was against Plumtree. Our innings increased in contributions with each new pair. Ruth had an exciting duel with their captain (6 runs but bowled once), Ella hit a beautiful off side boundary, and Megan hit four 4s. Everyone bowled well; Eve (on debut), Megan, Helena and Ella all took wickets, and the fielding supported the bowlers with enthusiasm, commitment and skill. Special mention should go to Megan for aggressive and secure fielding close to the wicket.
Vixens 148 Plumtree 110
In the second game we were up against the unbeaten (and very smart) Kinoulton team. As always we batted first, debutant Tilly opening with Amy. Amy hit a 4, and Tilly supported very well. Next came the Ruth show, with a six and three 4s, ably backed up by Eve. Ella and Rachel did well, the former well caught on the boundary. Finally Megan and Fran batted bravely against two expert bowlers. When our turn came to bowl we did well once again, but the wickets wouldn’t quite come. Megan almost clung on to a high caught and bowled chance. Finally Tilly got a wicket with her first ball, but we couldn’t force another breakthrough. Till the last couple of balls it could have gone either way – a six off the last ball of the innings exaggerates the difference between the teams.
Vixens 123 Kinoulton 135
A very good week for the girls, whose performance as a team met with approval from the spectators. You can see their development as thinking cricketers, aware of what they are trying to do. Ruth led by example, Rachel showed immense improvement in all aspects of the game.
Southwell Vixens, Kwik Cricket 8th June
The first game was against the very impressive hosts. After a shock first ball dismissal, Amy and Helena batted well, Amy striking a good 4. Our next pair was a mixture of youth and experience: Ruth struck the ball well, Molly showed great promise but also generously gave catching practice to mid-wicket. Chloe and Beth did well on the first outing, and Fiona and Mati completed the innings well. Radcliffe batted well. Although our bowling stayed positive, some of the fielding wilted a bit under pressure. Notable exceptions were Ruth and Fiona.
Vixens 94 Radcliffe 144
In the second game we batted first against Wollaton, who featured three of our players in their team. Against an inexperienced team, Helena and Amy began well, Ruth hit the ball mightily, Rachel (on debut) scored well, and Mati took advantage of some disengaged fielding to hit three boundaries at the end. Mati built on her success with a well-taken catch from Molly’s bowling. Chloe, Helena and Ruth also took wickets; and all the bowling and fielding improved considerably in a super team effort.

Southwell Vixens Kwik Cricket 24th June 2007
This week we travelled to Old Bridgfordians, where we maintained our 50% record, albeit in 2 tightly-fought, competitive games.
First we were up against Plumtree. Harriet won the toss and decided to bat. After three balls she decided to start moving her feet, having remembered she was playing cricket rather than rounders, and smote mightily. Ruth, returning from a week’s sabbatical, scored three fours at the end, but our score of 207 left our bowlers and fielders with a tough task. And we were almost up to it! Harriet, Megan and Ruth started off excellently, eagerly supported by the fielders. It wasn’t till the last pair came in that Plumtree passed the Vixens’ total, and even then a few aerial shots narrowly evaded the fielders – Helena being particularly unlucky in a good final over.
Vixens 207 Plumtree 219
In the second match we faced the smartly-attired Kinoulton girls. Harriet won the toss again, and again elected to bat. Once again it took her three balls to get her feet moving, but after a first over in which we lost 2 wickets, the batting went from strength to strength. With the bigger pitch, the girls pushed singles to great effect, with excellent calling (telepathically from Lucy!) and backing up – particular mention should go to the partnership of Helena and Amy. Ruth unselfishly ran singles, while her partner, Megan, clobbered the ball spectacularly at the end. When we bowled, Harriet started things off as well as ever. Megan executed a very good run out having just failed to cling onto what would have been a miraculous catch. Ruth bowled well and unluckily. Fiona bowled straight and got a wicket as a result, but when the last pair came in 10 runs were needed and it was anybody’s game. Lucy bowled well, conceded a well-hit 4 but took a vital wicket with her next ball. So 9 were needed from the final over. Cometh the hour, cometh the girl. Helena stepped forward and demonstrated to everyone just how much she has improved; only three singles came from the six miserly balls, as Megan – and others – demonstrated the value of secure ground fielding and good backing up.
Vixens 229 Kinoulton 222
Once again, two very good team performances with immense improvements being shown. As our distinguished scorer commented, “The girls are playing like a team now, not a bunch of individuals.” The commitment and enthusiasm are impressive, as is the desire to learn and improve. Thanks to the girls, and family supporters who cheerfully braved the inclement weather. Chris Steel Southwell Vixens – Girls Kwik Cricket Team, June 2007 Three weeks into the season, the girls have a perfectly symmetrical record. Each week we’ve won one and lost one, but the statistics mask a massive improvement both by individuals and the whole team.
So far, 16 girls have represented the club, only one of whom had played in previous years.
A fortnight ago, Southwell hosted the league. Thanks to powerful batting from Amelia B and Ruth, we beat Kinoulton. We then lost to Bridgfordians who possessed some strong batters, and who held more catches than we did!
Last week we visited Kinoulton. The first game was lost to Radcliffe as one or two new players adjusted to the game. In the second match we beat Wollaton.
This week we played on a damp pitch at Wollaton. In the first game we played the home team, which featured 2 of our players, Mille and Emma. Good bowling restricted Wollaton to 226. In reply, Harriet and Ella started at a cracking pace. Very young debutants Megan and Francesca were slightly unlucky, the two Amelias scored well, then Lucy and captain Patsy hit and ran very well to carry the newly-monickered Vixens to 252.
We faced a strong Caythorpe team in the second game. Patsy took a good caught & bowled at the end of the first over, but after 4 overs some lusty hitting had taken Caythorpe to 242. However, excellent bowling and fielding meant that Caythorpe made a net score of –4 in the second half of their innings. Special mention should be made of Emma’s fielding, the keen involvement of Amelia B and Harriet’s calm, reliable bowling. When we batted, Harriet and Ella once again took the attack to the bowlers. The Amelias were slightly unlucky, and then Millie and Emma batted bravely against a very good bowler. Patsy and Lucy were left to score 13 to win from the last two overs. They ran between the wickets superbly, backing up and calling well. With one ball remaining, Patsy needed to score 4 to win. In a do-or-die effort, she was well caught on the boundary.
So halfway through the season, the girls are making very pleasing progress. They are playing with growing confidence and assurance, and there are genuine signs that a number of good cricketers are developing. Chris Steel

Southwell Sparks Kwik Cricket July 2005
Southwell Sparks (Girls) – Sunday, 4th July The Sparks went into today’s matches nearly at full strength and with some confidence. The first game was against Newstead Abbey. Sparks batted first. Robyn and Francesca pushed the ball around nicely and ran some excellent singles. Ellie J and Cissy consolidated before Yasmin hit three 6s in successive balls. All the girls batted and ran with real skill. When Newstead replied our fielding wasn’t quite so sharp, and they hit some fine blows. Emma B slowed them down in the middle, and Francesca and Robyn each took a superb catch. But Newstead had a bit too much firepower.
In our 2nd game we faced Papplewick Dolphins. We bowled first, with great consistency, and fielded well (Francesca and Robyn to the fore). Ellie C returned to the team with a lovely, accurate over. Dolphins ended with 150 – a challenging target. But the girls are now confident cricketers who don’t panic. Robyn and Francesca got us off to the usual good start. Ellie J hit a couple of 4s and Yasmin slightly disappointed with only one 6! When Holly and Emily came in, we needed 3 to win. Holly responded with two successive boundaries, Emily chipped in with one of her own, and the pair batted very sensibly to achieve a good victory, and a record score for Sparks. Papplewick 150 Sparks 165 The girls have made great strides this year, in all aspects of the game. Their team spirit and mutual respect is a joy to experience.
Southwell Sparks (Girls) Kwik Cricket, 27th June Sunday 27th June saw the return to competitive action of Robyn, following her Rooney-esque footballing injury. This was fortunate as many other players were unavailable for a variety of reasons (hockey, cycling, watching England subside at Trent Bridge, stiff necks…). Our first match was against Papplewick Dolphins. We batted first, Robyn getting the team off to an explosive start with 18. Steady batting by the whole team saw Swifts past 150 for the first time ever. In their reply, Papplewick were stymied by excellent catching from our cover point, Emma, and a superb debut over from Maddy, in which she took 2 wickets. Sparks 155 Papplewick 114 In the second match we were up against Southwell Byrons and their stand-in coach, Mr Merryweather. Bowling first, Sparks restricted the Byrons to 156, Charlotte bowling very tidily and Robyn picking up an excellent catch. However, Byrons bowled and fielded superbly, catching very well in the deep, and Sparks slipped to 93. Even Emily’s first 4 couldn’t win us this one. Sparks 93 Byrons 156 In the absence of Lucy because of a stiff neck, the team was expertly captained by Holly, aided by Robyn. Chris Steel ______________________________________________________ Southwell Sparks Kwik Cricket, 13th June We travelled to Newstead Abbey for the second week’s games. The first was against the much-vaunted Southwell Byrons. On a small pitch, the Byrons played the leg-side clout with some skill. A number of our bowlers suffered, although debutants Emily and Emma O kept the Byrons quiet in the middle order. However, 190 was a stiff target. The girls set about it with gusto; Holly cracking three 4s in the 2nd over, and Emma B hitting a 6. We scored a creditable 146. Southwell Byrons 190 Sparks 146 The second game was against Newstead. We batted first and managed 123; 6s from Lucy, Holly and Chloe being the highlights. However we wilted in the heat in the field while Newstead amassed 187 – once again our opponents made skilful use of the short legside boundary. Sparks 123 Newstead 187 The fact that the girls were slightly disappointed by the results demonstrates the strides that they have made. They play cricket with great skill and determination, as well as enthusiasm and enjoyment. They continue to be a pleasure to manage! Chris Steel _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Southwell Sparks Kwik Cricket, June 6th. The girls opened their 2004 campaign with home matches against Calverton and Papplewick Falcons on Sunday. Optimism amongst coach and parents was good, although some of the participants required encouragement. In the opening match, Calverton batted first. The girls fielded well, and two tight last overs from Yasmin and Ellie restricted the opposition to 123. In reply, after a cautious start, excellent batting from our middle order of Lucy, Amelia, Yasmin and Holly took us past Calverton’s total and our last pair consolidated effectively. Calverton 123 Southwell Sparks 140 In the second fixture, we were up against the Papplewick Falcons who featured some diminutive players. Papplewick batted first: there was good bowling, although there will be opportunity to work on the close fielding on Friday evening. The statistical highlight was Libby’s double wicket maiden. In reply we batted comfortably. Cissy and Francesca got the team off to another good start, Amelia hit a superb off-driven 4,Yasmin discovered the joys of 6s and Ellie rounded things off with a 4. Papplewick 115 Southwell Sparks 146 The team was captained with great enthusiasm and encouragement by Lucy. Chris Steel Southwell Sparks 26th June
Week 4 took us to the picturesque Newstead Abbey ground, famous (in Kwik Cricket terms) for its very narrow boundaries and consequently very high scores.
Sparks 139 (145 for 1) Blidworth 116 (122 for 1)
Sparks 178 (184 for 1) Papplewick 173 (191 for 3) Another victorious week and the girls have done superbly. We’ve won 5 games, and beaten every team in our league at least once…All except for the Byrons who we meet next week! _________________________________________________________________________________
Southwell Sparks 19th June
Off to Papplewick for Week 3 of the competition.
So after 3 weeks, Sparks have a 50/50 record. Last year – when we won 4 out of 10 – was our best in recent seasons. Let’s see if we can beat that in 2005, and maybe even get a “plus” score: this team certainly has the quality and spirit Chris Steel _________________________________________________________________
