Southwell lost the toss and were put into bat on an evening where the
weather again played the game! Southwell opening pair, McCarthy and Carr put
on 59 off 9 overs before McCarthy retired on 36 and Carr asked to retire on
23. This lead to the team generally all chipping in with runs to finish on
105 for 3 off 20 overs. Checkley also chipped in with a solid 16 and Rob
Brown who is developing well as the season progresses with 7 off about 10
balls, not out.
Farnsfield played well and in the spirit of the game where Southwell had 9
bowlers and 9 of their players bat and Farnsfield likewise fielded 10
bowlers, all played a role in a match that could have been upset by rain mid
game. The team was noticeably well lead by Matt Sisson who encouraged
throughout and lead from the front with a solid 22 against a strong bowling
attack. Farnsfield finished 25 runs short of the target on 80 ably supported
by "Eddie Extras" who was top scorer on 24!!!..We know what we need to work
on in the nets.
Well played to all and Congrats to Jonathan Butler for being nominated
Players "Man of the Match".. A new award recently introduced.
Southwell vs. Welbeck (Away) 8
aside Cup 16th June 2008
One parent
suggested that we either must be at the wrong venue or the home team hadn't
yet turned up - the only other cricketers about being "a much bigger older
team".
Welcome to
Welbeck - where they grow them BIG!! Southwell fielded a young less
experienced team and were dwarfed by the very big experienced Welbeck U13s.
Welbeck won
the toss and elected to bat on a rock hard wicket. Welbecks big powerful
hitting on the vast bumpy pitch meant that the 6 fielders were always up
against it. It required pinpoint bowling and tireless running in the field
to restrict the scoring. Southwell rose to the occasion. All bowled well,
led by Chris Cummings (Capt.) 13-2. There were 0 No Balls and only 4 wides
and together with 2 Run Outs, 3 Catches and 1 Bowled, Welbeck were
restricted to net 86 (off 16 overs); still a daunting target.
Matt Bowles
and Jake Saleh opened the reply against a very fiery Welbeck attack. Matt
(calypso cricket to the fore) hit 10 off the first over!
GAME ON!!
Matt (28) and
Jake (3) finished their stint 34 for 2 (one each). Jack Brookes (5) and Ed
Yates (10) added 19 for 2 against tight but still quick bowling and Chris
Cummings (7) and Jack Surtees (2) added 13 without loss.
Enter the
final pair Jonathan Butler and Rob Brown needing
42 off 4 to
win. One over in they had managed 6 (mainly thanks to the bowler (3 wides)).
36 off 3.
Time to get some wood on it. 26 runs off the next 2! Leaving
10 off 1.
They got
9 and
were 6 inches short of the 10th! (Jonathan (27) Rob (7) - calling that
Howard would be proud of!)
Despite
loosing the team were cock-a-hoop at their performance - smiles, laughter
and lots of noise.
Players Man
of Match - Ed Yates who having been chucked in at the deep end, not only
survived but rose beyond first match nerves to perform like an old hand. His
stop at mid off, to a cannon of a shot that bounced badly, thumping him hard
in the chest, when many would have just got out of the way, summoned up the
teams determination. Top Stuff!
Thanks also
to Chris Mitchell and his Welbeck team for their part in this well mannered
match. It was a testament to their sporting nature. They could well have
just "bounced" us out of the game. They didn't bowl a single short pitched
delivery! Anybody who has seen Ryan Mitchell bowl will know how great that
gesture was - he is a seriously quick County Squad bowler.
Well done
Simon Carr
U13 - MCC Spirit of cricket cup - 2nd
round versus Calverton
Southwell beat Calverton by 6 wickets in an evenly matched contest when the
weather played "ball" as well!!
On a really miserable evening when the rain threatened from mid afternoon to
stop the match taking place, it managed to barely hold off to allow
Southwell and Calverton to play.
Calverton won
the toss and elected to bat.
Good performances from their opening pair (Kirkham 21 and Evans 26*) enabled
their innings to start at a good pace at around 5 runs an over. A projected
100 at that stage on the Southwell wicket and with a damp outfield was
always going to be a challenge. Devon McCarthy came on 1st change for
Southwell and immediately slowed the batting with a consistent and accurate
spell of bowling, 4-1-6-2. Good bowling from supporting bowlers continued to
put pressure on the batters who finished the innings on 68 for 2.
Good bowling spells included, Surtees, 0-11 off 3, Ashworth (who played a
blinder!!), 0-7 off 3 and Josh Cottam, 0-2 off 2.
With Southwell openers ordered to sprint and get pads on while the weather
threatened, the opposition prepared to defend their total.
Southwell opening pair, McCarthy and Gleeson did very well to keep a strong
and accurate opening attack out early in the innings, although Dan Gleeson
was out to a great ball in the 3rd over for 3 however his presence had
already been felt by Calverton when he took a great catch off McCarthy's
bowling at mid-off to remove Calverton's No 3. Dev McCarthy continued to
play confidently against good bowling until eventually being given out LBW
for 14 to Kirkham who had bowled fast and accurately finishing with
4-0-10-2.
Just when Calverton may have thought things were definitely going their way
at about 30 for 4, Zac Ashworth and Jack Surtees came to the wicket together
and seemed to see the ball as big as a football. Ashworth was unbeaten on 30
with three 4's and a stylish 6 over mid wicket and Jack Surtees, a very
speedy 18* including three 4's, one nearly being a 6 picked off his nose to
deep fine leg. (Umpire and coach was so impressed, he forgot to call
No-Ball!!). Southwell reached the total of 68 and finished with 72 with 4
overs to spare.
Impressive was Calverton's "Eddie" Extras that only amounted to TWO!
An impressive team performance yet again from the Southwell unit who
continue to impress and who are always prepared to step up and take
responsibility when required. A great win under difficult conditions for
both teams who played the match with great spirit and sportsmanship
Special mention for Rob Brown who stepped in as "guest" keeper with Matt
Bowles and Ben Carr unavailable. Did a great and courageous job, resulting
in ONLY 5 byes. Well done!
Thanks to Andy Ashworth for scoring in the rain and all the parents/players
helping put the square fencing back up in the rain after the match.
3rd round of
the cup, here we come!...Weather permitting!!
Garth McCarthy
20-May Papplewick vs Southwell (A)
Southwell batted first at Papplewick and started at a steady pace that
allowed them to build a defendable total of
100 for 6
on a very quick
outfield. Good innings of 38 n.o from Ben Carr, Chris Cummings 10 and Dan
Gleeson 11 were the major contributors in an innings where all who batted
chipped in. Fortunately for Southwell, Eddie Extras was second top
scorer with 18.
Pick of Papplewick bowling was Michael South and Sam Wells both with 2 for
8.
Papplewick responded tentatively to the score posted by Southwell by
unfortunately losing their opening batsmen early for a low score, however
solid performance from Jae Gill at 3 who was run-out for 22 steadied the
ship. Solid bat from Tom Simpson with 3 4's as his last three scoring shots
resulted in scoring 17 before being one of Jack Surtees 4 victims, bowled.
Papplewick ran out of overs and finally could only manage
79 runs. Pick of the bowling was
"Mr Accurate" Jack Surtees with 3 overs 4-11!! ALL BOWLED!!
Southwell won by 21 runs.
Running between the wickets and warming up before bowling were the positive
lessons the team took from this evening. Well Played!!
7-May.
Welbeck vs Southwell
A well
prepared Welbeck U13 side hosted Southwell under perfect conditions on a
near perfect wicket on the 7th May.
Southwell won the toss and elected to bat. The Southwell side were a strong
blend of experience and players having literally their first experience
facing and playing with a hardball.
A reasonable total was always going to be required on a slick outfield and
hard wicket. Southwell openers set about this task with a target agreed in
the changing room of 100!
Solid batting and seeing off the pacey openers from Ben Carr (35no), Elliot
Checkley (37no) and Devon McCarthy (14) meant that Southwell were on target
and now needed the middle order to make their contribution which they did as
always. Matt Bowles again showed flare and scored a very quick 9 runs n.o
supported by Zac Ashworth who had to deal with some quick bowling for the
first time in his playing career.
An all round great performance resulted in Southwell exceeding what they set
out to achieve and finished 20 overs on 115 for 2.
Welbeck were always going to be under pressure for a bowling attack that has
significant depth and has demonstrated consistency beyond the Manager's
expectations. The team average no more than 14 extras per match which at
this level is commendable and makes setting fields and the wicket keepers
job a lot easier. Thomas top scored with 26 and Scott batted well for 23 n.o
however the bowling pressure meant that the side were always going to be
chasing a run rate that quickly got beyond 7 runs an over. Cottam 0-12,
McCarthy 2-24 and Checkley 1-9 contributed to ensuring that runs were hard
to come by for Welbeck. Special mention for Jake Saleh whose fielding
contribution was exemplary chasing down well struck shots and stopping a
load of runs through some very agile fielding.
Welbeck finished with some stylish Caribbean style batting and finished
their innings with 94 for 3.
Once again, great team spirit, good sportsmanship were the winners on the
day. Well done to the team:
Devon McCarthy, Ben Carr, Elliot Checkley, Zac Ashworth, Emily Stutchberry,
Rob Brown, Jack Brooks, Jack Surtees, Josh Cottam, Matt Bowles, Alex
Hughes, Jake Saleh.
