2008

 15-May U11 v Fransfield (H)

On a bright night at Top Ground Southwell U11s bowled first against our guests Farnsfield.

All of our bowlers did well against a good Farnsfield team, with Richard Brock , Tom Winning ( who bowled our first Maiden of the Season), and Joe Stutchbury ( who took the only wicket to fall ) doing well. Our fielding is improving and Jordan Barnes Ella Hughes Mikey Gleeson along with 9th Man Jos Jacobson all did well walking in, backing up and preventing 2's .

Farnsfield finished on 269 ( aided by our 16 wides !) with a net score of 263.

Batting second Jordan and Greg showed great concentration and they didnt loose a wicket against some good bowling ( Liam Delaney 2overs for 0 runs). Our second pair of Mikey and Ella got off to a nightmare start loosing a wicket on their first ball but then they battled well and didnt loose anymore.

Ruth Sprawson hit the ball hard but kept finding the fielders and our last  2 pairs lost 6 wickets between them including 3 run outs !

We finished on 242 but lost 7 wickets giving us a net 195.  Farnsfield , who only bowled 4 wides the worthy winners.

Areas to work on ...all of them but some small improvements in all areas will make a big difference.

My thanks to Mrs Winning for her help and to John Thompson who scored and warmed the team up.

 8-May U11 v Papplewick

This was never going to be easy. A well practiced and experienced Papplewick team batted first and Southwell bowled well with just a few wides, good keeping from Dan Jones and an excellent run out  by Greg Behl and a stunning catch by Ruth Sprawson.

After a good start by Papplewick our bowling pegged them back with them finally scoring 262 runs for 6 wickets ( Net 226 ). Max Clarke took 2 wickets, and Jordan di a good job as 9th man.

Our batting struggled against some good bowling. We did witness some sharp running between Henry Harmer and Dan Jones. In the end we scored 240 for 13 wickets( net 162).

Many thanks to John Thompson for Umpiring and Phil Clarke for keeping parents happy !

Team : Greg Behl, Ruth Sprawson, Joe Stutchbury, Dan Jones, Tom Winning,  Mikey  Gleeson, Max Clarke, Henry Harmer, Jordan Barnes

2006

Southwell U11’s 2006 – Hardball 8 a-side Manager & Coach: Garth McCarthy & Simon Carr

As we are ever closer to the 2007 season it has made me all the more aware that I have yet to pen a short report to recognise a team that excelled during the 2006 season and done the club proud in both team and individual performances.

I am also proud to report that 15 players represented the team on one or more occasion. This hopefully supported the clubs vision of enabling as many players at this age to experience hard-ball cricket. There are many keen players at this level, so any support from Parents who are able to help is always appreciated.

 The Squad :

·        Dev McCarthy (Captain),

·        Ben Carr (V/Captain)

·        Dan Gleeson

·        Elliot Checkley

·        Matt Bowles

·        Joe Saleh

·        Sam Barnes

·        Christian Cummings

·        Jack Surtees

·        Emily Stutchberry

·        Jack Brooks

·        Josh Cottam

·        Rob Brown

·        Alex Green

·        Sam Shapely

The Under 11 Southwell “hard-ball” team had a very successful season and developed in strength and experience with each game throughout the season. Practices were held in the nets and out in the field on a Friday evenings and were well attended with many enthusiastic players coming up to Top Ground each week.

The weather at the beginning of the season was not ideal for cricket and this lead to many matches having to be re-scheduled and in the end one match not completing and another cancelled due to the opposition being unable to field a side, right at the end of the season. The team eventually completed 9 competitive matches over the season. This all being the case, the team were joint winners of the league and worthy Semi Finalists in the Cup that was narrowly lost to Farnsfield, the eventual winners of the tournament.

Amongst the teams success there have also been individual successes and milestones reached. Dev McCarthy and Ben Carr both made their debuts for the Southwell Development squad captained by Peter Johnson.

In the county arena, both Devon and Ben acquitted themselves well as players for Notts County representative u11.

The benefit of writing this report late has also enabled me to congratulate Elliot Checkley and Matt Bowles who were down selected at the end of 2006 to a final group from which the 2007 u11 Notts. County representative side will be selected. We wish them the best of luck for the forthcoming coaching sessions at Trent Bridge.

The success described above does not happen without help from many quarters and a big Thank You and note of appreciation is due. Firstly, thanks to the parents for transporting players to matches and practice, ALWAYS on time and to provide support! Many players and coaching peers from the club were also always on hand on a Friday to assist Simon and myself with the coaching.

The statistics below provide a summary of the players’ performance over the summer. The team played 16 over matches batting in pairs and each player bowling 2 overs. A player lost 5 runs each time they were out.

2005

Southwell u11 - in-door squad retained the Mansfield & District League in-door trophy they won in 2004!!

Competitive and responsible play were at the heart of the teams approach to the games with only losing 9 wickets throughout the tournament. Strong batting performances from Christian Cummings and Devon McCarthy ensured strong finishes in all batting innings. An all-round team performance with the ball ensured very few wides or no-balls were bowled in relative terms and thus we managed to claim many wickets through diligent bowling which put the opposition under pressure.

Outstanding fielding and consistent bowling helped the team achieve their success in a confident fashion  during the initial rounds and the finals.

Southwell beat Mansfield & Plessley and Mansfield Hosiery Mills in the initial round robin and then rounded matters off with strong wins against Kirkby Portland and Farnsfield on the 4th December to win the annual floating trophy.

The MHM league team was made up of :

bulletGarth McCarthy - Coach/facilitator
bulletDevon McCarthy (captain). 3rd year in the tournament
bulletBen Carr. 2nd year in the tournament
bulletDaniel Gleeson
bulletChristian Cummings
bulletMatthew Bowles
bulletOliver James
bulletElliot Checkley
bulletCash Radford

Footnote : The U11 indoor side are also currently competing in the John Birch in-door league on a Saturday evening and after 3 league matches are unbeaten, having claimed victories against Ratcliff on Trent, Notts/Arnold A and Notts/Arnold B. Some thrilling cricket has been played with the team really enjoying the exciting format.

The squad who play on rotation, captained by Devon McCarthy include:-

KWIK CRICKET LINK

Southwell Sparks                      26th June

Week 4 took us to the picturesque Newstead Abbey ground, famous (in Kwik Cricket terms) for its very narrow boundaries and consequently very high scores.

First off, we played Blidworth.  Faced with erratic bowling we batted steadily all the way through.  Top scorer was Sophie with 13, but everyone contributed well as we lost only 1 wicket – Ellie out for the first time this season, caught on the boundary.

Our bowling was good throughout, and the fielding keen.  So much so that we only conceded runs off 7 balls in the 8 overs.  Alice bowled fast and accurately, taking a wicket, and Sophie, Lucy and Maddy all bowled maidens.

So, an assured victory.

                         Sparks 139 (145 for 1)            Blidworth         116 (122 for 1)

Our second match was against Papplewick, who had picked their “good” team!  Their manager announced that they had accidentally selected a County player, but he “wouldn’t try his hardest”.  The girls weren’t convinced!

We lost the toss and batted.  And at the end of the first 2 overs, we found ourselves with 33 runs – Holly and Lucy going boundary-mad.  Ellie and Rebecca added a further 16, Rebecca hitting a 6 and a 4 off consecutive balls.  Alice and Sophie made 22, including 8 byes off the County player and two 5s(!); and Emily and Libby consolidated things.  Libby was unlucky to hit her wicket.  So a Sparks record score of 178.

When Papplewick batted, we knew that we would have to defend the short boundaries with accurate bowling and cat-like fielding.  We started well; Holly taking a wicket first ball, but then both Alice and Emily managed to drop the next one (unluckily, they stopped the 4 well).  Sophie and the aforementioned Alice and Emily all bowled tightly, and then Rebecca took her first wicket.

All of which meant that Papplewick needed 42 to win off the last 2 overs.  No problem, thought the spectators, until … the County man walked out to bat.  With trepidation Libby stepped up to bowl – she did her job, only 20 runs scored.

So captain Lucy faced the task of conceding 20 or less from the final over.  Her first ball was straight, the batsman swung, missed, and the ball hit the stumps.  28 needed off 5, County player (“not trying” - having scored 19 off 5 balls so far) to face.  The ball duly disappeared to the boundary, but it bounced.  So 24 off 4 balls.  The next one was also clubbed away – but again it bounced.  20 needed off 3, and short of no balls we knew we’d got it.  Lucy “allowed” him to hit 14 off the last 3 balls.  But we’d won!

                         Sparks 178 (184 for 1)            Papplewick 173 (191 for 3)

Another victorious week and the girls have done superbly.  We’ve won 5 games, and beaten every team in our league at least once…All except for the Byrons who we meet next week!

Southwell Sparks                      19th June

Off to Papplewick for Week 3 of the competition.

Our first match was against Newstead.  For a pleasant change we batted decently from the start.  There was one unfortunate run out, but otherwise all the pairs batted excellently – our captain, Lucy, was the only player who failed to hit a boundary.  Alice and Ellie both hit three 4s, and everyone contributed well to a score of 166.

When Newstead replied, Charlotte and Claire each took a wicket in the first 2 overs.  Everyone else bowled very steadily and there was some outstanding fielding – particularly Rebecca’s two catches at mid on.  Ellie completed an excellent match with a fine final over.

Sparks 166 (172 for 1)             Newstead 109  (127 for 3)

The second game was a rematch against Calverton, who had beaten us a fortnight ago.  Francesca replaced our star fielder Rebecca, who went off for a father’s day lunch.

Once again we batted first.  Holly and Charlotte got us off to an excellent start – Holly managing four boundaries in her 19.  Ellie and Libby ran brilliantly, and Ellie managed a 6.  Lucy and Claire played sensibly and cautiously till the last ball when Lucy smote a further 6!  The final pair, Alice and Francesca, accumulated a few more runs.  One of the most pleasing aspects of a very good batting performance was the fact that we lost no wickets – very good batting and excellent concentration on a very hot day!

In the field we bowled well, but unluckily.  Charlotte sent one through a gap in the stumps, Holly missed a fairly straightforward caught and bowled chance, and there were a couple of occasions when a more pernickety umpire would have given the batter out “hit wicket”.  But the bowling was accurate and the ground fielding once again very secure – special mention to Claire and Francesca who were outstanding.  Calverton’s last pair attacked the bowling daringly, but once more Ellie ensured the victory with a tight last over.

Sparks 156 (156 for 0)                        Calverton         144  (144 for 0)

So after 3 weeks, Sparks have a 50/50 record.  Last year – when we won 4 out of 10 – was our best in recent seasons.  Let’s see if we can beat that in 2005, and maybe even get a “plus” score: this team certainly has the quality and spirit

Southwell Sparks,  12th June

We played hosts at Top Ground to the other teams this week.

In our first match against Papplewick we were rather too generous hosts!  Papplewick batted first and made a good score of 150.  We were unable to hold onto a couple of sharp chances, but the ground fielding was excellent.

In reply, each pair managed some good batting, but each pair also lost a wicket.  Therefore we were never really in contention.

Pappplewick 150 (150 for 0)                Sparks 103  (127 for 4)

The second game was the much-hyped contest with the boys of Southwell Byrons.  We managed a brief coaching session which culminated with Charlotte demonstrating the power of her pull shot – the look on one or two of our opponents’ faces was interesting!

Sarah and Emily got us off to a good start, which Ellie and Libby built upon expertly – a straight-driven 4 from Ellie being a highlight.  Our last two pairs continued the excellent work, Charlotte and Sophie each managing a boundary.  With excellent running between the wickets, we ended with a decent total of 133 (our best this year).

Byrons got off to a good start, but were stymied by a finely-judged catch by Emily, running in from the mid-wicket boundary.  She followed this up by bowling one of the Byrons out.  Ellie and Francesca continued the pressure with accurate overs, so that the last pair of batters required 12 to win.  Byrons’ coach still had an ace to play, however, and the final over began with the scores level after three well-struck boundaries.  Maddy bowled her customary mature over, but we were unable to take that vital wicket.

Still, it was a wonderful game, played in a friendly, competitive spirit.  The girls really did themselves justice: batting, bowling and – particularly – fielding were excellent.  Our next challenge is to play this well in the first game each week!!

Sparks 133 (145 for 2)                                    Byrons 138  (150 for 2)

Special thanks to Dee Carr (and Hattie) for staffing the tea bar throughout the morning.

Kwik Cricket, 5th June

Sparks opened their Kwik Cricket campaign with 2 games at Calverton.

Southwell Sparks          109  (127 for 3)           v          Calverton         145 (151 for 1)

A rusty start!  There was some excellent bowling from Libby and Maddy, but Calverton’s last pair scored 25 to set a stiff target.

Lucy and Sarah started our innings very brightly, but a superb run out knocked us back a bit.  The remaining batters took a while to remember to get their feet moving (both while batting and running!) and we were tied down by some excellent fielding and accurate bowling.

Southwell Sparks          123 (135 for 2)            v          Blidworth         116 (128 for 2)

A much better performance.  After eccentric running by our opening pair, Ellie and Libby started the recovery – Ellie hitting an excellent cover driven boundary.  The next pair put on 16, featuring a 4 from Maddy and a 6 (off a diminutive bowler) by Claire.

The bowling and fielding was very efficient.  Alice took a wicket, Francesca returned to the fray with a very good over, and Ellie, Claire and Sarah all starred in the field.  The final over began with Blidworth needing 14.  They hit a 4 off the first ball, but Maddy kept her nerve and bowled her second excellent over of the day.

Overall, there is a great foundation to build on.  Lots of progress made already, plenty of potential to improve.  As always, excellent team spirit.

Under 11 End of Season Report – 2004

 Under 11’s – Champions Again!!

Southwell Under 11’s have retained the League Championship which they won last year! They have achieved it against all odds – half of the 15 players used were 1,2 or even 3 years young; and they also had to play 9 of their 11 games away from home.

They also had to complete the season with a demanding schedule of 4 games in 5 days – including 2 matches on the final Sunday. Despite being decimated by holiday commitments they showed spirit and strength in depth and continued their successful run. This commendable attitude was an essential ingredient of their league success.

They won 9 and lost 2 of their matches – one defeat being in the Cup Final.

 Players involved were:

Grant McCarthy

George Bacon

Sam Johnson

Max Danby

Chris Bowles

Liam Gleeson

Devon McCarthy

Scott Hill

Adam Boyd

Paul Smith

Euan Haynes

William Bell

Matthew Bowles

Ben Carr

Richard Brierley

Congratulations to all players – and best wishes for their forthcoming match as Champions versus Rest of the League, which is at Mansfield Hosiery Mills on Sunday September 12th, start 10.00 am.

Congratulations as well to those players who progressed to represent the County side (Grant McCarthy) and also the League Representative side (Sam Johnson, George Bacon, Chris Bowles).

U11's Win County Club Championship

Ellerslie 29-August-2003

Ellerslie - 29 Aug 2003 Click Thumbnails for larger image

As Champions of the Mansfield League the Under 11’s qualified to play in the Notts County Club Championship, in which they played against the Nottingham League Champions (Wollaton) and the Bassetlaw League Champions (Bridon).

A good performance in the next game v. Bridon was now essential if we were going to recover from this defeat – and the boys delivered in style!! Excellent bowling and fielding from everyone restricted Bridon to 218. The team then batted sensibly throughout their innings, without conceding a single wicket. Two boundaries at the end from Matt Wookey ensured that not only did we win but also boosted our overall run total which would be significant if Bridon beat Wollaton in the final match.

The Bridon bowlers, unable to take a wicket against us were then on fire against Wollaton – taking 6 wickets in 8 overs. They just scraped a win off the last ball, leaving Southwell as County Champions with a vastly superior overall run-rate.

Under 11 Hardball Squad News

(August 31-2003)

U11 hardball match report - Papplewick vs Southwell

The final match of the season that had been re-scheduled many times eventually was played with Southwell, now the County Club champions, keen to keep their unbeaten league record intact.

Southwell won the toss and elected to bowl. A good consistent bowling performance from all the players supported by a sound fielding performance, realised wickets from the first over bowled. Sam Stead topped the bowling  with 4-10 while, Matt Wookey, Grant McCarthy, Dominic Williams and Joe Marshall all chipped in with two wickets apiece. An energetic and supportive fielding performance closed the Papplewick innings with a net score of 166 having lost 13 wickets.

Southwell opened their batting with a boundary coming from the bat of Sam Johnson in the first over. A steady middle order performance from Sam Stead  (17*) and Dominic Williams (18* including four consecutive boundaries) put the game out of reach of the home side. The innings was rounded off with Matt Wookey making a net 286 that included 6 boundaries.

An all round solid team performance led to a final net score of 248, having lost 10 wickets in the excitement to score runs.

The game was played in good spirit with enthusiastic support for all the Southwell players including one player in the opposition who was strongly supported by both the Southwell players and supporters, Devon McCarthy, from Southwell who filled in for Papplewick, as they were a player short. A well held catch (the batsman, Alex Rainbow never thought so!!) and some accurate bowling helped the home side.

This concludes the league season’ with a 100% record! Southwell now play the ‘Rest of the League’ on September 21st.

Tim Willson

Under 11 Match Reports 2003

 4/6/2003             SOUTHWELL v WELBECK

Southwell U11’s first hardball match this season was against Welbeck Warriors.  This was going to be the ideal match to get everybody much needed hardball experience.

We lost the toss but still batted first.  Matt Wookey and Joe Fryer made a very respectable total of 39 for no wickets off their 4 overs.  Max Danby and Jaisal Patel batted very well and did themselves proud.  Sam Johnson and Joe Marshall put more precious runs onto the scoreboard and Alex Rainbow and Grant McCarthy completed the innings superbly.  We ended up on a nett score of 251.  A good score for our first match as a team, but would it be enough?

Everybody bowled extremely well, all bowling tightly with wickets from Matt, Joe F (2), Joe M and Sam.

Our total ended up to be enough. What a great start to the season. Well done lads!

SOUTHWELL 275 for 4      WELBECK 246 for 5

 5/6/2003            M H M v SOUTHWELL  (CUP)

Our second game of the season was against Mansfield Hosiery Mills.  This game was the first round of the cup.  Everybody was looking forward to this match, after the success the day before.

We lost the toss and were made to field first. Everybody bowled well but not enough wickets were taken and we ended up needing a nett score of 297 to win.

Joe F batted well, making 17 (out once), Grant 16 (out once) and Joe M 13 not out.  We ended up on a nett of 230.  We were unfortunate to meet a team on form in every respect.  Their running between the wickets was awesome and gave us something to think about.

 Unlucky lads, next time!?!

MHM 314 for 2      SOUTHWELL 266 for 6

23/6/2003            SOUTHWELL v M H M

Our third match of the season saw us face Mansfield Hosiery Mills again but this time in the league.  Could this be time for revenge?

We won the toss and chose to bat.  The innings was opened extremely well by Joe F and Sam followed by Dan Benson and Dom Williams.  With Joe M and Will Anstey coming in as the third pair and Matt and Alex rounding off the innings,  we ended up on a nett score of 250.

Everybody bowled very well with Alex 3-1-6-0, Sam 2-0-3-1, Dom 2-0-6-1 and Joe M 2-0-6-1. Mansfield Hosiery Mills ended up on a nett of 241.

Dan, Dom and Will all made their debuts for Southwell.  Excellent win lads!

SOUTHWELL 268 for 3    M H M 259 for 3

 24/6/2003            FARNSFIELD v SOUTHWELL

A beautiful summer’s evening and we were off to meet Farnsfield  who had not lost a game all season. Would their winning streak come to an end?  We’d do our best!

We won the toss and chose to bat first again.  Matt and Sam got us off to a flyer, scoring 45 for no wicket.  Will and Jack Beaumont put a few more precious runs on the scoreboard.  Alex and Dom took to the crease, then Joe F and Grant ended the innings with 22.   Our nett score was 272.  Was this going to be enough?

Everybody bowled economically without taking any wickets but a good well disciplined fielding display meant we took 3 run outs.  They had a nett score of 267.  Farnsfield’s winning streak had come to an end because of us!  Well done lads!   A fantastic result enjoyed by a crowd of supporters enjoying both the cricket and the weather.

 FARNSFIELD 285 for 3    SOUTHWELL  302 for 5
