Southwell took a young side to Wiseton to take on last years promoted side. With the wicket looking damp, Southwell won the toss and elected to bowl. Butler (6-0-37-0) and Sprawson (8-3-17-2) opened up and kept the Wiseton openers relatively quiet. Sprawson bowled immaculately but just couldn't find the edge until the 8th over. By this stage the big Wiseton opener was starting to punish the bad ball and soon had 100 out of a total of 120. Galligan (8-3-16-1) and Behl (8-2-32-1) kept up the good work but it was Dev McCarthy who halted momentum as he bowled the centurion for 106. By now the rain had arrived but despite unfriendly conditions for spin, McCarthy (7-2-33-2) and Haynes (4-0-30-0) kept the total to a respectable 172. The Southwell reply started shakily with Behl departing in the 3rd over. Wickets fell regularly but the runs were always flowing as McCarthy soon got into his rhythm. At the 20 over point, Southwell had passed 100 and McCarthy had reached his half century, but when Allen and Scott fell in quick succession Wiseton looked favourites. Enter Euan Haynes! With 70 runs still required Haynes started an innings that was to see Southwell to victory and Haynes to a score of 37* including 4 boundaries and a maiden 6! Southwell made it with 9 balls to spare and it was a pleasure to see Haynes and young Alex Milton at the crease as the winning runs were scored. A fantastic start against a good side that will be up there come September. |
